New bwtarif successfully launched!

This year, December 9 marks a very special day for passengers in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg: The new bwtarif standard fare will be introduced throughout the federal state on 9 December 2018 to coincide with the new timetable. This fare supplements existing district fares, making journeys across borders both easier and cheaper while helping to make public transport as a whole even more attractive.

bwtarif, a standard fare for the entire federal state, will allow passengers to use the trains and buses of all 22 transport networks throughout Baden-Württemberg with just a single ticket. The fare is valid for intermodal journeys on all local trains (including sub-urban trains) and regional buses. Under the motto: “One destination, one ticket. Throughout the federal state”, bwtarif allows passengers to use suburban trains and trams as well as buses, from start to finish. “bwtarif makes it easier and cheaper than ever to use public transport in Baden-Württemberg," said Minister for Transport Winfried Hermann (Green Party) at a press conference on bwtarif on 22 November 2018 in Stuttgart. On this occasion, he expressed both his satisfaction with the results and his thanks to civity and Intraplan for their technical support and good collaboration.

The new fare will be introduced in several stages: From 9 December 2018, single tickets and day tickets will be available at railway station vending machines and points of sale and as e-tickets. As part of efforts to develop the fare further up until 2021, there are plans to include season tickets (e.g. monthly tickets) in bwtarif for journeys with different means of transport. By simplifying the fare structure and lowering ticket pric-es using federal state funding, local public transport is to be made more attractive, thus enticing more people to switch to climate-friendly transport.

Dr. Arne Beck, the partner responsible for the project at civity, comments: “We are very pleased that BW-Tarif GmbH can now successfully conclude the first stage of bwtarif – after many years of intense preparation with the railway companies, the 22 transport associations and the federal state of Baden-Württemberg".

Since 2013, civity along with Intraplan has been involved in the conception and design of bwtarif, both in project management and in content and technical design. In this context, we work closely with BW-Tarif GmbH office and its shareholders.
