Matthias Schulz studied geography at the University of Hamburg. He then worked as a freelance environmental planner and expert, while lecturing in computer cartography and geographical information systems (GIS) at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. He began his consultancy career in 2005 at BSL Management Consultants, before joining civity Management Consultants in June 2010.
