In almost every Federal State such competitive procedures have already been taken place against routes served by long standing incumbent operators. This article gives an overview of experience from previous exercises and anticipated developments going forward. The authors conclude with suggestions to transport authorities, bus-operating companies and regulatory bodies on how to handle the risk inherent in the competitive public transport market for commercial services by bus in Germany.
