Digitalisation as an essential success factor for optimal asset management
The Danish railway infrastructure manager Banedanmark is currently exploring the possibilities of a systematic approach to digitalising its asset management. A major milestone on this path is the migration to SAP S/4HANA. civity has significantly supported the necessary decision making.
The aim of the project was to evaluate Banedanmark’s opportunities for improving its asset management practices, to propose recommendations and to describe the extent to which migration to SAP S/4HANA contributes to this improvement.
In a first phase Banedanmark’s strengths and weaknesses were evaluated and objectives to improve asset management practices were derived. The maturity level of each target was evaluated as well as other necessities needed to close existing gaps. Furthermore, it was specified to what extent the SAP functionality supports target achievement and which data has to be saved and provided by SAP.
Since the result of this study has an impact on almost the entire organisation, in a second phase the evaluation was coordinated with the management team and internal stakeholders such as asset managers, planning, finance, purchasing, traffic, quality and safety.
In the final phase, strategic guidelines for the implementation plan were developed and requirements and consequences for implementation were derived. Organisational and cultural changes are a prerequisite or at least contribute to a significant improvement in plant management.
Banedanmark’s executive board is currently using the results to specify the implementation of SAP S/4HANA.
