Study on the effects of corona on the transport sector in Europe published
Together with our French partner PMP Conseil, we analysed and evaluated the consequences of the first lockdown on public transport in France, Belgium and the DACH region and derived recommendations for necessary further steps by public transport authorities and transport operators.
Based on 45 interviews with public transport executives in the five above-mentioned European countries as well as an in-depth analysis and demand modelling, the study answers the questions of the extent of the first wave, the impact on passenger numbers as well as the business model of public transport in general and the expected changes in the mobility sector.
To continue the trend towards higher utilization of public transport and survive further lockdowns, adjustments must be made in the following four areas:
- Public transport authorities (PTA) should revise and adapt the model of risk sharing between them and public transport operators (PTO)
- Optimization of the business model with a clear focus on passenger recovery
- Development of new financing models that also involve major beneficiaries in the fi-nancing of public transport
- Develop approaches to make the offer more flexible without compromising reliability for customers
