Demographic change has a range of effects on companies operating in the waste sector, with regards to both customers and the company’s own workforce.

Demographic change has a range of effects on companies operating in the waste sector, with regards to both customers and the company’s own workforce. The shift in demographic structures and the population reduction, together with changing habits, all lead to significant effects on waste streams. And with the average age of the workforce increasing, questions arise particularly in the operational departments as to the best way to carry out the physically demanding and labour-intensive work necessary. It is essential that the waste industry begins to prepare itself as early as possible for these developments.

Julia Zacharias lectured on the significance of demographic change for the waste industry in cities and possible solutions at the 71st Symposium of the ANS e.V. (Working Group on Utilising Municipal Waste) in Braunschweig on January 26, 2011.
