The hitchhiker‘s guide to the future of digital mobility market places – new civity discussion paper examines success factors for mobility platforms
For more than a decade, public transport operators around the world have been trying to reach for the stars to improve our multi- and intermodal travel experience. However, none of the public transport operators, agencies and technology providers have landed on MaaS yet. But why, what is actually the problem? Why do users not take the integrated solutions of information, booking and billing from a single source? Is not everything supposed to be so simple? To answer these questions, a new discussion paper of civity examines the landscape of mobility-as-a-Service platforms (MaaS).

Bringing more trains on track: an analysis of challenges and improvement opportunities for European network capacity planning
Increasing the railway traffic is one of the most effective ways for reducing carbon emissions in the transport sector. The EU aims at doubling rail freight traffic and even tripling high-speed passenger traffic by 2050 (Compared to 2015). The German target of doubling all passenger rail traffic by 2030 (Compared to 2019) relies heavily on the implementation of the so-called “Deutschlandtakt”. Through improved train frequency, key routes in long-distance traffic will be connected in a half-hourly cycle. This also means a rethinking of traditional planning principles: while timetabling traditionally followed the existing network capacity, the process of capacity planning will soon be guided by the track access demand. Together with a rigorous network expansion, optimising the use of existing network capacity will be key for achieving the ambitious traffic targets.

Cost estimate for municipal climate protection – civity has developed a tool for municipalities as part of GermanZero’s Climate Referendum campaign
With its Climate Referendum project, NGO GermanZero e. V. intends to introduce the climate protection measures required in all German cities. Asset management in uncertain times – acting with foresight rather than ‘running on sight’
Due to the contact and travel restrictions in response to coronavirus, public transport operators face enormous challenges in many respects. Passenger numbers are down by 50 to 90% and this is only one of the initial direct effects with more impacts expected in the area of personnel and resources. This topic was also analysed by Andreas Wolf, Andre Klein and Benno Bock, together with Anna Fechner, who presented their results at the 8th Florence Conference on the Regulation of Infrastructures. The main focus: The algorithms of route planners and the related risks for individuals and cities, e.g. due to manipulation either in favour of car transport or to the detriment of public transport.
